Incinerator Decision Won’t Be Accepted

Community Fights Back

Incinerator Decision Won’t Be Accepted

Writes Jack White

The communities of Cork Harbour were left sickened last Thursday, May 31st, when news broke that An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission to Indaver for a waste incinerator in Ringaskiddy, despite widespread opposition to the plan.

Amongst those voicing their disgust, anger and sadness at the terrible decision by the board were, An Tanaiste Simon Coveney TD, Michael McGrath TD, Micheal Martin TD, Donnchadh O’Laoghaire TD, CHASE (Cork Harbour Alliance for a safe Enviroment), local councillors, including Cllr Marcia D’Alton and Cllr Seamus McGrath, community activists and members of the general public as a whole.

The anger soon turned into motivation though, as CHASE launched a Go Fund Me page, to fund their efforts for a Judicial Review of the board’s findings. A Judicial Review will determine if a case can be heard in the High Court, the overall estimated cost of the Judicial Review, leading to a High Court case is between €150,000 – €200,000.

CHASE say, “To consider this Judicial Review and to continue this fight to stop the incinerator being built in Ringaskiddy we have a very short time to raise this money”

Details of the Go Fund Me Page can be found on: https://ie.gofundme.com/no-incinerator-in-cork-harbour/

As of Thursday evening, June 7th, almost €40,000 has been raised on the Go Fund Me Page.

The decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant permission is made even more bizarre by the fact that the board went against the advice of their own inspector, Derek Daly, who following in the footsteps of both his predecessors, Inspector Philip Jones (2001 Hearing) and Oznur Yucel-Finn (2009 Hearing), became the third Oral Hearing inspector reject the suitability of this site for Indaver’s proposed development.

Since this piece went to print in this week’s edition, two public meetings have taken place which we’ll report on in next week’s edition.
