A packed field is expected to take their marks at the Annual Kinsale Regatta Five Mile Road Race that takes place on Friday, August 2nd at 7.30pm From Kinsale GAA’s grounds.
With a repetition as a fast course, the scenic route that runs parallel with the Bandon River and inner harbour is also another additional factor that has always added to the race’s attraction.
It is something the race director, Jeremiah Callanan emphasises: “The race goes towards town with great views up and down the river the whole way to the Trident Hotel, finishing right in the centre of town where there will be a great Kinsale Regatta Festival atmosphere.”
With a reputation for those seeking to set a PB, Jeremiah remarked: “The course is perfect for a personal best and the fastest five-mile course in Munster.”
On offer on the night, is a special prize for anyone who can break the current course records, currently standing at 24.25 held by David Rooney and the ladies fastest times was secured by Aoife Cooke at 26.55 .
The competitive nature of the race is reflected in the number of prizes that are on offer that range from the first man and woman home to prizes in all the following age groups: 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 70 as well as providing a prize for the first wheelchair athlete home.
Locally, the interest will be in the runner who claims the first-place home as a resident of the town, with second and third also having their achievement marked too.
It is a very important bragging right among the town’s athletes for the next twelve months.
While the race, which always attracts a top field of quality runners from across the country, is always very competitive, it is also an event that always has a large proportion of those who simply want to stretch their legs.
“It's for everyone that would like to run the classic Five-mile distance and enjoy the beautiful scenery and atmosphere,” said Jeremiah
No race can succeed without the support of the local community, and the Regatta Five Miler organised by Kinsale Tri Club is grateful to the support of the Gardai and the local voluntary emergency services.
In addition, sponsorship is key to ensuring the race runs smoothly by helping to deter the costs, including insurance, as well as providing the necessary funds for the race’s prizes.
In that regard Jeremiah paid tribute to its main sponsor Bandon Co Op and several support sponsors, including Head To Toe Therapies Kinsale, O'Regan Concrete, John O'Keeffe and Co Solicitors and Rhino Print, Design and Sign.
