The Carrigaline IFA Gala Dinner Dance which took place in the Cork International Airport Hotel on November 2nd, 2019 raised a fantastic €2,200 for the Mercy Heroes Campaign.
The campaign raises money for POONS, the Paediatric Oncology Outreach Nursing Service which allows children with cancer to receive treatment from the comfort of their own home. The service covers a large geographical area from Youghal to Bantry and Mitchelstown to Kinsale, as well as surrounding counties so that all children have access to treatment regardless of their location.
Mercy Super Hero Callum McCarthy, from Nohoval Co. Cork who benefitted from the POONS service and from the community rallying around him, also attended the gala with his family.
“Being able to deliver a home-based option to these children enhances their quality of life and allows for some normalisation of family life during cancer treatment. It also means there is a reduction in hospital admissions and promotes early discharge from the Hospital. We are also able to provide ongoing training and development for the team of Clinical Nurse Specialists so that they can provide expert care to the children through informed research and up to date knowledge.” Says Olga Buckley, Paediatric Oncology/Haematology CNS.
Speaking about the Mercy Heroes campaign, Micheál Sheridan, CEO, Mercy Hospital Foundation said “Our patients are heroes, the staff at the Mercy Hospital are heroes, and donors like you are heroes; wonderful real-life heroes that help us deliver the best research, diagnosis, treatment and care to patients every day at The Mercy University Hospital, the People’s Hospital.”
