Michael McGrath set for Europe

(JJ Hurley)

National media outlets are widely reporting tonight that Michael McGrath is set to be nominated as Ireland's next European Commissioner.

Often tipped as a future leader of the Fianna Fail Party, the current Finance Minister would be seen as a safe pair of hands for such a prestigious role.

Already, speculation is growing that any role would be in the sphere of economics, where he has proven to be a very efficient and capable minister.

According to media outlets, the three party leaders of the current coalition government have agreed the move tonight, and the decision is set to be rubber-stamped by the cabinet tomorrow.

It would be expected that should a vacancy arise in the Cork South Central Constituency, his brother Seamus would be the Fianna Fail candidate to contest the by election.
