Kinsale’s storied Desmond Castle is set to have a new chapter, with renovation works on the historic building set to begin later this year.
Minister for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan was last week briefed on plans for the renovations as he toured the iconic “French Prison” with OPW staff.
“This beautiful 15th century castle is one of the most important buildings in not just Kinsale, but all of County Cork,” Minister O’Sullivan said.
“I’m delighted to announce work will commence on the renovation of this building this year. It will take a couple of years to complete as the work that needs to be done is extensive, but I’m pleased this incredible building is on the path to once again being opened to the public.”

Originally built as a customs house in around 1500, the castle has a storied past: naval prison, workhouse, local gaol, ordinance store, meeting hall and wine museum.
The castle closed to the public in 2018 due to water damage.
“There are water egress issues as well as extensive electrical works that need doing. Some parts of the interior need a good bit of work but having seen first-hand the diligent care and passion with which the OPW are bringing to this, I am very confident,” he said.
Minister O’Sullivan praised the local community groups backing the castle’s renovation.
“Their dedication to not just preserving this unique castle but seeing it back in public use is inspiring. A huge thank you to them for all their hard work to bring this castle back for the people of Kinsale,” he said.
