Robs On The Road – Local Men Cycle To Athens Writes Jack White
Robs On The Road is the journey of two Cork men who have decided to cycle from Cork to Athens to raise funds for the Rainbow Club, Cork, a charity supporting children and families living with Autism, the only centre of its kind in Ireland. Robin O’Mahony from Crosshaven and Rob Lehane are the men behind Robs On The Road and left Cork on the ferry to Roscoff, France on Saturday, April 8th, setting aside two months to complete the 4,000km journey to Athens. Robin O’Mahony, who will be turning 26 on the trip, grew up in Crosshaven and is currently living in Cork City and was heavily involved in sport locally growing up, most notably with sailing in the RCYC. Robin’s inspiration to do the cycle came from a family connection, Robin’s nephew attends the Rainbow Club and he has seen the positive effects it has on children and families living with autism, and believes promoting awareness for autism as well as fundraising is a way to give back for all the great results achieved by the club. He began fundraising with an annual charity cycle from Crosshaven to Baltimore every Christmas, (now entering its third year). He recently discovered a passion for cycling and has decided to combine it with a love of travel, it wasn’t long before the plan to cycle across Europe was hatched after hearing about a few friends doing something similar. Robin says his desired outcome for the trip is, “to raise funds and awareness for Autism and The Rainbow Club, meet great people along the way and prove that an average Joe Soap can do a lot on his own two legs!” The Challenge: “We are unsupported and will be carrying all the gear on the bikes with us. This includes clothes, cycling gear, tools, spare parts, cooking equipment, tents and sleeping bags, altogether weighing up to nearly 40kgs per bike. Not easy when crossing over the Alps and aiming to get 100km+ cycled every day! If anyone feels compelled to join us for a bit, you’re more than welcome! Just make sure your name is Rob.
