School Constructions Re-Commence

The development of what is to be one of Cork’s largest ever school projects is set to get back on the road in the near future, following a recent halt to the process. Last week,An Tánaiste, Simon Coveney TD, confirmed that a “milestone” had been reached in appointing a contractor for the three-school site, in Ballinrea, Carrigaline.

Speaking to The CarrigdhounMr. Coveney said, “The Cork Education and Training Board has confirmed to me that MMD Construction (Cork) Limited has been appointed as the lead contractor for the campus, this is great news and the project is pressing on with the company getting straight to work.”

However, residents in the nearby estate of Carrigcourt remain concerned at the prospect of the schools, should the necessary infrastructural changes not first take place. Congestion and traffic levels both in the morning and in the evening are expected to be impacted greatly and as a result local residents have been lobbying their local representatives for some time, seeking assurances.

The Contracts Manager for MMD Construction, James Barrett, recently wrote to residents in the vicinity saying, “during the time that the works are being undertaken, MMD will endeavour to ensure that everything is carried out to make the construction process as neighbour friendly and unobtrusive as possible.”

Along with road works and re-alignment, MMD will also be responsible for developing cycle lanes and a lay-by area for cars on the grass areas adjacent to Carrigcourt. Further upgrades to the Ballinrea Road and roundabout are set to be done by Cork County Council, for whom a local engineer from Carrigaline is now believed to be leading the way for new upgrades.

Should residents have any queries about the construction plans they can contact Mr. Barrett on 087-3679832, or directly to MMD Head Office on 021-4975979.
