The January 2020 winner of the very successful Southside & District Sports Awards Scheme is Mr. Dylan McCarthy, of Rebel Wheelers, who recently won their second consecutive Hula Hoops Irish Wheelchair Association National Cup Title at the National Basketball Arena with a 60-47 point win over Killester.
First year CIT Business Studies student Dylan scored 6 points in the final. Dylan is from the Skehard Road area of Blackrock.
The Awards are sponsored by the Cork International Hotel (Main Sponsors) in association with Awards Sponsor Gerald McCarthy and Media Partners, The Carrigdhoun Newspaper. The awards scheme is now in its twelfth year and is going from strength to strength.
Dylan started playing wheelchair basketball 2010 when he joined the Rebel Wheelers group. When he joined the group he tried many different sports but committed to basketball almost straightaway.
Dylan played in the junior league for years after this, learning the game with his teammates, one of whom he still plays alongside today, Jack Quinn.
With the help of Paul Ryan and Jerry O’Regan, Dylan became the player he is today with the benefit of all their dedicated training and advice over the years.
In 2015 Dylan started training with the senior team. This really helped as he gradually built up his experience with older players.
In 2016 Dylan made his senior debut and from then he has been playing with the team, building up his experience in many different ways.
Last season Rebel Wheelers won the treble with the National Cup, National League and League Cup which was a great accomplishment as a team.
Dylan also competes for Ireland internationally and in the summer of 2019 he won a bronze medal for the under 23 squad in Finland at the EPYG games and Ireland also came 5th at the division C Euros for the senior team in Bulgaria.
