Spanish Ship to Return for Battle of Kinsale 425th Anniversary
Preparations are well underway in Kinsale for this month’s commemorations marking the 425th anniversary of the Battle of Kinsale, and organisers have announced a major addition to the programme.
The Kinsale Cultural and Heritage Society has confirmed that a Spanish sailing vessel, built as a full replica of the ships that travelled to Ireland in 1601, will arrive in the harbour as part of the festivities. The visit is expected to draw significant public interest and add a vivid maritime dimension to the anniversary events.
The vessel, the Nao Santa María, will berth in Kinsale Harbour from September 17th to 21st. During its stay, the crew will open the ship to visitors, offering guided tours and demonstrations that illustrate life aboard the vessels used by Spanish forces more than four centuries ago. The arrival of the ship is seen as a rare opportunity for the public to engage directly with the maritime history of the period, and organisers expect strong attendance from local residents, schools, and visitors to the town.
The ship’s visit complements two major commemorative events being held by the Society. The 1601 Living History Display will take place at Short Quay on Saturday, September 19th, featuring re‑enactors, historical demonstrations, and educational exhibits. The following weekend, on Saturday, September 26th, St Multose Church will host the Battle of Kinsale Seminar, bringing together historians and speakers to explore the significance of the battle and its lasting impact on Irish and European history.
