The Tracton Biodiversity Group has been honoured for its outstanding contribution to environmental awareness, community engagement and biodiversity protection in South Cork. The passionate volunteer-led group is the latest recipient of the Cork International Hotel Community Spirit Award, in association with The Carrigdhoun Newspaper.
Founded to foster a deeper appreciation of nature and biodiversity in the Tracton area, the group brings together local farmers, scientists, academics, nature lovers and members of the public. Their work spans some of the most scenic and ecologically important areas in South Cork, including Minane Bridge, Roberts Cove, Fountainstown and the surrounding countryside.
In January 2025, the group launched their book ‘Tracton – Waters, People & Precious Places’ at a packed Tracton Arts Centre. The launch event was both poignant and inspiring, with local speakers celebrating the rich natural heritage of the region, including the unique Minane River basin.
Beyond the publication, the Tracton Biodiversity Group runs festivals, guided nature walks, and educational workshops for all ages. Their collaborative approach, especially in partnering with large-scale and professional farmers, is helping to promote sustainable practices and enhance biodiversity on local lands — a true example of practical, community-led environmental stewardship.

General Manager of the Cork International Hotel, Eoghan Murphy said: “The Tracton Biodiversity Group exemplifies what it means to act in the spirit of community. Their commitment to protecting our natural environment while engaging people from all walks of life is truly commendable. It’s inspiring to see how they are bridging the gap between conservation and farming, all while strengthening local identity and pride. We are proud to honour them with this month’s Community Spirit Award.”
Vincent O’Donovan, Publisher of The Carrigdhoun Newspaper congratulated The Tracton Biodiversity Group saying “Their commitment to protecting our environment is admirable. We are lucky to have a group with such commendable ethics and intentions in the local community. Congratulations to all involved in The Tracton Biodiversity Group.”
The judging panel for the Community Spirit Awards is made up of a mixture of representatives from the public and private sector within the community.
