Carrigaline Toilet On The Move

Carrigaline Toilet On The Move

Writes Leo McMahon

Carrigaline’s public toilet is on the move this year from the Owenabue car park to the Community Park.

In a report to the monthly meeting of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD), senior executive officer Kevin O’Regan said the pay-to-use unisex superloo will be relocated to the north east corner of the park and work would commence once service connections had been agreed. In addition to being in close proximity to public walkways, the community park also has a playground, tone zone and skateboard park and proposed running track.

To a motion from Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) requesting a footpath in the park from the north east corner to the skateboard park, Mr O’Regan said the exact location of the toilet would have a bearing on the line of the proposed path routing.

The maintenance budget for the park would probably not be able to fund the cost of installing the footpath and it was likely that some money would have to come from the General Municipal Allocation of the MD.

‘Once we have determined our allocations from the funding schemes in March, we will be in a position to confirm if funding can be provided to cover the cost of the work or if there is any funding left from the skateboard park and running track,’ Mr O’Regan added.

Welcoming the report, Cllr McGrath said the figures spoke for themselves regarding the low usage and financial return from the location of the public toilet in the car park and predicted far higher usage in the park. A path was already worn on the grass leading to the skateboard park and he expressed the hope funding would be found to provide this.

Suggestions have also been made by councillors for enhancement of the car park with a landscaped town centre and riverside plaza for public events and seating.
