Footbridge for Ballygarvan ? Writes Leo McMahon
A cantilever pedestrian bridge for Ballygarvan is under consideration, Cllr Rachel McCarthy (SF) was informed at the monthly meeting of Cork County Council’s Bandon-Kinsale Municipal District. She was told the senior and executive engineers recently visited the village and while it was deemed not possible to put a footpath on the existing bridge, the council was looking at some sort of cantilever footbridge on the school side of the wall. There had also been a suggestion of an off-road path between the housing estate and school but there were mixed views about this. Overall, it wasn’t a quick and easy fix. Cllr Aidan Lombard (FG) said there was a submission for this in the Local Area Plan and called for a design of what could be done concerning the footbridge. Cathaoirleach Kevin Murphy (FG) said a concrete bollard at a turn off at Fivemilebridge could wreck a car and asked that it be removed. He also called for improved vision coming from the east at Ballintubber Cross to Garrisavogue and was told land purchase was need in order to improve the road at Oldcourt. Cllr Gillian Coughlan (FF) said green and white bollards at the junctions for minor roads were very effective and asked if these could be installed between Bawnleigh, Ballinhassig and the N71. In reply senior executive engineer Charlie McCarthy said such bollards, while desirable, were normally confined to junctions along national roads only and couldn’t be put in randomly along non-national roads.
